If you suggest traditional methods of family planning as a panacea for societal ills, you'd want to look at the culture of silence and disrespect for women that occurred here for generations incl. marital rape, denial of contraceptives, annulment rather than divorce and really shyte gynaecological care. I'm not quite sure why elevated birth rates are such a good thing, considering that we have no jobs for the young people we already have and that we are going to export them to other countries anyway. The baby boom in recent years is linked to economics - couples are having a third child, maybe even a fourth, where previously they could have only afforded one or two. That may change with the recession. France has high birth rates because it actually provides incentives and childcare facilities - unlike here.

@Joel l fail to see how a campaign to help older women avoid the rigours of a crisis pregnancy (especially if they are isolated ) could possibly effect the lrish birthrate ? They are the ones who must adjust to attendant life changes and not you.

Does anyone here think artificial contraception has made it more difficult for women to spot the natural bio markers in relation to their fertility and infertility? The Galway clinic has a fertility care expert who has had more successful non ivf fertility treatments after couples had been trained to spot the various bio indicators for progesterone and estrogen patterns be they normal or abnorma, the same doctor observing that too many women are completely lacking in awareness of their own individuality fertility patterns and when they change. Regardless of my own philosophical, anthropological and religious misgiivngs with contraception, is there a commodifying and commercialisation of women's fertility, can anyone believe that a hormonal pill for most of the women's young life could be good for health? Who is gaining here the pill popping IPP and associated pharma industries, certainly nothing holistic about it anyway.
