Best practice - how to ride a bike in 93 pages

Here is something to give us all a chuckle.

British police guide to riding a bicycle

British police chiefs have reportedly produced a 93-page guide telling officers how to ride a bicycle.

The Police Cycle Training Doctrine, which comes in two volumes, gives officers advice on how to balance so they do not fall off, how to brake and how to avoid obstacles such as kerbs and rocks.

Reminds me of my favourite lightbulb joke. How many social workers does it take to screw in a lightbulb. None - but there's six of them working on a pamphlet entitled "Coping with Darkness"...

Anything that promotes safer cycling is a good thing. People learn how to drive a motorised vehicle in traffic, so why not learn how to cycle safer. Road position and visibility to other road users are very important factors when it comes to bicyclists fatalities.

A very good series of articles, that I recently came across, Fear of Cycling 01 - Essay in five parts by Sociologist Dave Horton on the excellent Copenhagenize.com - The Copenhagen Bike Culture Blog, deals with the whole subject of fear in relation to cycling. There is an optimum point between this fear and the daredevil behaviour of cyclists that is so often witnessed. Cycling is a healthy, low impact, sociable and convenient activity that is very much overlooked as a transport choice.
