Is Social Welfare really Social Justice?

As unemployment rises in Ireland an uncomfortable truth dawns -

That we can only afford Social Welfare when times are good. And that at a time when it is needed most by those who have contributed to it all along we can not only not afford to expand it pro-rata but we can't even sustain current spending.

Now I do appreciate that we can't let people fall into utter Poverty. But is Social Welfare really the solution in the provision of Social Justice?

It's a necessary thing. A socially just society should provide it as part of caring about the welfare interests of all its citizens.

We need to be extremely careful...that we do not create a situation where social welfare becomes an economic advantage! It happened in the past and was exceptionally badly managed!

it is happening again!....some that I have talked to, that are now on the social(and doing nixers) are now better off!

This is such a backward step...back to the 80s...(and I was there too)...it led us along a road of tax evasion being acceptable!

On the other hand though...there are s0d all jobs out there!

Maintaining the unemployed isn't what's sending us under. You can make a very reasonable argument that after a set amount of time the unemployed should take part in mandatory public works, but the idea of just allowing the unemployed fall into poverty isn't the way forward.

When no social welfare system existed people got by. The welfare state is only a relatively recent invention. People didn't evolve to become unable to live without state support.

It's not a particularly popular measure but given the perilous state of our public finances it must be cut.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

The Welfare State is starting to die world wide,it costs to much.Governments have shown that they are useless at using resources ,they use it for vote buying which cripples a country.Inflation , taxation, vote buying is the name of the game for government. We can see now taxation falling, inflation falling, vote buying shagged .As the old saying goes "Everybody want to live off the government but the government wants to live off everyone else" this is the society we now live in it's rightly fupped ,because there are to many living off the state and not enough to keep it going.
A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.
