Im suprised this hasnt been brought up...
…THE Irish government (sic) is to reduce the age of consent by a year to 16, in a reform of the law on teenage sexual activity and the protection of children recommended by a parliamentary committee.
The change is likely to be opposed by several groups, including the Rape Crisis Network, which last night said the news was “deeply disappointing”.
The only exception to the age limit of 16 will be in relation to sexual activity with adults in positions of authority, including teachers, youth leaders and sports coaches. In order to make a clear distinction from sexual activity among teenage peers, these adults will be liable to prosecution if they have sex with a teenager under 18.
(from the times)But Rape Crisis Network spent last week engaged in frantic lobbying against the change.
“We don’t feel there is any huge demand in Ireland to change the age of consent,” said Fiona Neary, its executive director. “The primary reason for retaining the age of consent is for the purpose of child protection. The higher you can have it in Ireland, the greater the protection it affords.
“Teenagers are coming under a lot of peer pressure, bullying and low-level harassment to engage in sexual activity, and they tell us they use the age of consent as a barrier by simply saying, ‘I am too young to have sex’.”
While I see the need for the de-criminalisation of young people having sex with young people below the age of consent, this is very much open to abuse. Most cildren of this age are too young to make a decision of this nature. Many are pessurised into doing things because they want to feel loved or respected. While Im not suggessting 16 year olds arent responsible, I think we lay too much of a responsibilty at their feet, particularily in our society where sex is a marketed product that pervades every area of one's life. 16 year olds are still children and should be protected.
