Irish Greens to leave Fianna Fail government??

Interesting blog post from prominent UK Green Derek wall ... 11th Aug 2009 "Irish Greens to leave Fianna Fail government".

He suggests that the Greens are about to walk away from Govt in an attempt to save the party ... from his blog post ... "Rumours from Dublin suggest that the budget cuts that FF are pushing, will lead the Greens to ditch the coalition government. It is hoped that by bringing the government down the Greens will get some credit from Irish voters."

I would not dismiss this easily ... this guy is very well connected and he may have heard something. I also think it makes sense. If the Greens walk away from FF (and NAMA, budget cuts, etc etc etc etc etc) now they may have a chance of survival. It might be they only strategy they have left and this would win them back at least some of the support lost over the last few years. If they try to stick it out the Govt will probably be brought down by FF backbenchers and the Greens will be finished.

So watch this space... an interesting few months ahead!

It makes sense. Only way to salvage any seats is to walk on the budget negotiations

Isn't this the same Derek Wall who was harping on about calling it the irish "Not" green party as he doens't like them much? And wait - weren't you the same poster who brought Derek Wall to our attention on two occasions before this?

Sorry - but I have to call the source of this information into doubt here. He's not an insider in any sense of the word and the information here could have been re-posted by anyone who even gives a cursory glance at the boards.

Both you and I know that's an utter crock. If there's an election held anytime soon both government parties will be severely depleted with the greens losing most if not all their seats. I know it, you know it and most importantly the greens know it. There won't be an election.

I don't think any Green seats are salvageable, and should not be a good reason for taking such an action. We have enough gombeen Parties that put themselves ahead of the common good.

    Prenambulate.

They would have to walk pre-Nama.
Any pedalling off after that event would be cynically opportunistic.

You mean the Greens are going to support FF to the end even though they know they will be wiped out either way? I am lost for words......
