Green Party preview of 'An Inconvenient Truth'

Was at the Green Party preview of 'An Inconvenient Truth' last night in the Screen Cinema.

Excellent film - a real must see. The science was much more accessible than I had been led to believe by reports in the papers. Al Gore was quite amusing - nice to see he can take the piss out of himself.

Quite a few 'big-names' present, apart from the Green Party reps. Pat Rabbitte, Eamon Gilmore, Conor Lenihan, Fergus O'Dowd, Fiona O'Malley, the head of SIPTU/Congress (O'Connor??).

I also spotted Constantin Gurdgiev and John Hegarty, Provost of TCD.

I enjoyed the film, but wonder if it is a little US-oriented for general consumption. The core presentation on climate change is excellent, but we could probably do without the interludes on Al Gore's life and career.

The question is will it convert any skeptics? I'd like to hear from a climate change skeptic (if such a thing still exists) who has seen the film, but will the unconverted even go see it?

I was there as well and thought it was an excellent film, and a good initiative by the Greens.

It is very US-centric but that makes a certain amount of sense given that it's the US whose behaviour most needs to change.

I had a look at the IMDB user comments and sadly, although somewhat predictably, the pro-pollution lobby have not been won over.

Was there any mention of global-dimming? There was a great programme on BBC2 recently which showed how pollution is actually slowing down harmful heating of the earth. Apparently eco-lobby ignoring the phenomenon...

I don't think it was mentioned in the film, but global dimming is just one of a number of factors which may have shielded us from the worst effects of global warming up to now. I don't think the eco-lobby are ignoring it, it's just one aspect of the science surrounding climate change. The basic facts remain that global warming is now happening, and that human activity is the main contributor.

There was a suggestion from Paul Crutzen, winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, that we should inject sulphur into the stratosphere to cool the earth. Other than that I'm not aware of too many people pushing the global dimming effect as the basis for a serious solution to climate change. You can read George Monbiot's response to the idea here.
