From the link ... "At a time when we are seeking to offset the challenges posed by climate change, it beggars belief that the Greens would stand over any decision to cut forest premiums. It is proof positive that they have shaken off their tree hugging tendencies in favour of ‘pragmatism’ and ‘fiscal rectitude’."

Yeah ... and they have abandoned teenage girls, those in education, the sick, the old, the poor and the vunerable in favour of ‘pragmatism’ and ‘fiscal rectitude’ too.

    Labour oppose cuts.

    Wow. There's news.

By the by, many Greens are opposed to forestry premia (not premiums, as per Sherlock), in that they are mainly used for non-native Sitka Spruce and Norwegian Spruce, which cause serious damage to water quality.

And of course, had premia been increased, Sherlock would have been telling us that the Greens are sacrificing children for trees.

    Total bullsh1t.

The term "tree hugger" is used by mainly ignorant people who are so poorly educated that they do not understand the link between the maintenance of healthy biodiversity on the planet and securing the future of their unfortunate children

I digress, on the subject at hand I would be all in favour of stopping grant aid to plant industrial monocultures of alien Sitka spruce that have destroyed water sheds, blanket bogs and native woodland up and down the country thanx to the short-sighted ill-informed policies of successive governments implemented by the likes of Coillte. However the excelllent An Taisce backed native woodland scheme appears to be the most affected by this move which represents yet another failure of the GP in government

Wow......what would you plant in Ireland? We live in a country with a wind regime not conducive to growing quality broadleaves, even if we were to afforest the best land in the country with them. As for the Sitka that has come off the bogs, one can only commend the various past incarnations of Coillte over the years that produced tremendously valuable crops of timber from some of the most marginal land on this island and which has made us self-sufficient in construction timber. If anyone paid any attention , you'd notice that under the peat are assorterd stumps/remnants of Scots Pine and Oak which once grew there, but which due to a changing climate succumbed to the growing moss which led to peat formation. So when you next look at a bog, remember that the mineral soil beneath it was, 5000 years ago as fertile as the Golden Vale.
Yes, we need to conserve some peatlands, but let's improve and reclaim the land when we can. Those of us that make a living from the land need to live too, and Sitka Spruce is a champion among trees.
As an aside, I believe that the majority of Forest Service Inspectors who are supposed to know something about trees come from within a radius of 3 miles of Dublin city centre. But that's another story.....

Yeah, and why should farmers be paid to grow crops, couldn't they just pretend to be enjoying a hobby? I'm guessing by your user name there Gene that you'd open to the idea of "hobby camps"?

The term "tree hugger" is also used to describe those who are poorly educated in the science of ecology and think they can solve the world´s problems with backward practices and a PC attitude !! Environmental problems will be solved by good science.
