Green Party TDs opposed to pre-election pact.

The Times ran an article today quoting four Green TDs as against a pre-election pact, another who thought it required further consideration and the last saying that was in line with what he thought was the general membership's position.

The consensus seems to be that the Greens should run as an independent party.

Discussion please on the following: What would be best for the Greens in the upcoming election? An independent line, or a pre-election pact.

Please address the proposed discussion, thanks.

They depend on Sinn Fein transfers as well as Independent votes also to get elected. If they say they will go in with any party those transfers will not come to them and they will loose seats big time. BTW I still think they will go into coalition, this is just playing games.

The Greens have said they want to go into government. Perhaps it is not a question of 'if' more a question of 'who with'? I agree the Greens will rely on independent and Sinn Fein transfers to a certain extent, though I don't agree that 'this is just playing games' - the goal is to secure as many votes as possible and then negotiate for government.

Do you mean "if they say they don't care who they go in with" or "if they specify which party they will go in with"?

The Greens are in grave danger.
Potentially, all of their seats are under threat in '07. Sargent looks the safest, Gormley to a lesser degree.

ALL of their 4 gains last time came from FG, and 3 of these are big FG targets (DunL, DudS, CSC)
FG will also be gunning for a seat in Dublin North, and in DSE (and who knows who could lose out there)

The 4 TDs against the pact are presumably the 4 most likely to lose in 2007 - namely Cuffe, Ryan, Boyle and that guy in Mid West
