Not quite. He did indeed promise not to lead the GP into government with FF, corruption and Planet Bertie et al.

He just led his party through the FF approach, the negotiations and the vote of the party. He even nominated "Planet Bertie" as Taoiseach. And then took a junior ministry in that government.

I don't know where people get the idea that he did the "honourable" thing when he resigned as party leader.

trevor sargent will retain his seat and local vote.
The others will have gained more popularity due to their solid performance in government and proving that they can maintain an albeit unpopular, stable government during one of the toughest economic and political situations in decades. they are also dragging their coalition partners through this mess which they have created over the years and showing them possible solutions to the crisis by green means. locally nationally and internationally

Maybe the Greens are for happier and wealthier times, when you are safe in your own life, and can begin to feel concerned by the environment.

When the situation becomes grim, you think about how you are going to survive yourself.

Yeah - there's this little tiny problem with that, though. Pompeii's town council no doubt felt that they had "more pressing concerns" than those little rumbling noises ("perfectly natural").

See, this is an economic downturn. We're talking about economies contracting by much less than they've gained over the last decade. If we doomster Greens are right, then that little climate change thing we keep banging on about is quite literally the end of the world as we know it. Priorities, quoi?

When seemingly rational people come out with utterly irrational or outrageous statements, you can be taken aback. You might find that

Yes. he believes this will save their lives. Presumably he also beleives that they should forceably be given blood transfusions, against their parents wills, if it saves their lives.

    Do you?

"If it saves their lives." There's a massive assumption there. Medical science doesn't really give us such certainties. It's wishful thinking on your part, dotski.

It's disappointing that the Greens seem to have retreated from their long-held principle of respect for individual choice, personal belief, and (let's be clear) human rights. Witness their failure on fluoridation...

The way the polls are at the moment, a collapse in Fianna Fail would probably save a few Green seats. While FG and Labour may gain, it will be FF candidates that get taken out, particularly in constituencies where they have more than one TD - Dublin North, Dublin South, Carlow-Kilkenny.

The interesting part will be how well any eliminated FF candidates transfer to the Greens.

I can't see much hope for the seat in Dun Laoighaire, but I'd see seats being held in Dublin North (assuming Sargent stands) and Dublin South, with a decent fight being put up in the remainder.

And if FF candidates get eliminated early and they do get transfers from them, there's no reason to not hope for gains in Louth, Wicklow and Cork SC.

IMHO the Green seats in order of safety:
    Dublin South
    Dublin North
    Dublin South East
    Carlow-Kilkenny
    Dublin Mid West
    Dunlaoghaire

On a good day we can target Galway West and Wicklow. Don't know what to think about Cork.

Wearing my non-Green, ordinary person's hat, I'd say they'll get about 4 seats next time.
Putting back on my Green hat, I'd say they are acknowleged all round as being head and shoulders above the FF ministers, candidates are doing great work, the party has learned a lot about campaigning, people know that Green technology is the only way forward for this beleagured country, and I think a lot of people will be surprised at how well we will do.
If there is a future, it will be Green.
