It is, despite her mathematical illiteracy, a good and fairly painless taxation measure. And I am no tree hugger.

Your right, it isn't. I've also just submitted a paper to the Department of Finance suggesting they put a 1c levy on every time I open a door, use an ATM, have coffee and forget to put the seat down again. Now, I send roughly 100 texts a day, so that means I'd be taxed an extra euro a day, by the end of the year I'll have paid €365 more then usual.
No thank you!
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

Because I live in the West of Ireland and as such am isolated from the rest of my type so need to communicate with them daily.

Typical ex PD half arsed madness.
This would probably cost more than it would make. How would one deal with different types of text - prepaid (including bundles), monthly bill and free webtext. Are we not already paying VAT on our mobile phone bills?
And what about possible exemptions - eldery, disabled and priviledged members of the oireachtas.
Why does everything have to cost so much for the government to administer it. I dont see why it would cost all that much extra. The telephone companies levy their own prices quite seemlessly, dont see why this would add much to their woes in implementation. They certainly have no issue in changing their own pricing mechanisms.

Even the youngest amongst us seem to have better understanding --- why not copy the British and print more notes?? Would be better to start at the head of the government rather than once again target the vulnurable like the young and the aged - the less well off. Ok, get to the texts if they want, but they need to first get their act together and put themselves where the poor are presently rather than making the poor poorer and the rich wealthier.
Would love to see the views on this one.
