Green Party Convention 6-8 March 2009

Party members will be gathering next month at White’s Hotel Abbey Street, Wexford.

Each regional group, constituency group and standing committee may submit only ONE motion this year (as decided by National Council). They may initially forward up to five motions to the NEC for advice on which motions would be best to submit in order to promote the theme or facilitate a good variety of motions.

Technical motions (amendments to the Constitution or rules etc.) must be submitted to head office no later than 5pm on Friday 6th February.

Other motions (e.g. on policy) must be submitted to head office by 5pm on Friday 13th February.

The list of motions will be e-mailed to members by Thursday 19th February.
Anyone wishing to receive a copy of the motions by post should contact head office.
The deadline for AMENDMENTS to the motions will be 5pm on Monday 2nd March 2009
The deadline for submissions is tomorrow at 5. I wonder are any disgruntled Green groups submitting motions for debate that might prove uncomfortable for the ministers next month?

    How would debate prove uncomfortable?

The Ministers positions either stand up to scrutiny, or they don't. Open debate will bring this out.

What i really hope is that they stop being so pig headed and see sense. As has been suggested elsewhere they should do a deal with opposition for a guarantee of the same ministerial seats in return for giving them an election. Everybody wins.

Anyway, thats unlikely to happen so in the meantime - anyone involved in a Green group that's subbmitted a motion to the convention?

I think the TNS MRBI poll put paid to any chance of that happening. We need a Government that will make the hard decisions now, whilst we still have the resources, and not have to learn the lessons of the early 80s again.

And you think we're getting this currently, do you?

    Yep.

But whether the FF backbenchers have the cojones for it is another question. It is qute possible that they could buckle after coming under pressure this weekend from public servants.

Classic Fianna Fail theory would be to get out now, let FG/Lab feel the pain, and then resurrect themselves in a couple of years reminding people how FF presided over the good times, and FG/Lab presided over the bad times (yet again).

    People have very short memories.

    Don't they just...

How you can claim Fianna Fail are the party to make the "tough decisions" after Cowen's dithering with the Social Partners is beyond me. As a Green can you really say you're happy with the nature of the cuts, and those people and areas targetted, so far?

I gotta hand it to SPN, no matter what arguments are presented for the GREENS he always comes up with some QUIRKY angle for staying put.

The Greens will come in time, to be an acroynm for
