Money has no motherland; financiers are without patriotism and without decency; their sole object is gain.” Napoléon Bonaparte

Well as lovely as his other forgoings are, they concern different matters in principle in different contexts. This discussion concerns the particular matter of TDs taking pay reductions in these tough times as a token of leadership and solidarity, and so far Gogarty has been the one flying the kite, while Enda has acted to this detriment by undertaking an obligation.

Enda acted to his detriment by going off half cocked.
Lets wait until Sunday's papers come out. We'll find out a lot more then methinks.
Meanwhile, here's the Examiner's take on the farce:
Is Enda Kenny the peddler of populist nonsense or principled leadership?
The shadow cabinet members flanking him left Fine Gael’s pre-budget briefing some €5,300 poorer yesterday after their leader announced he was giving himself a 5% pay cut to show solidarity with those feeling the strain in these recessionary times.
“Sorry to land you in that there, lads,” he told his colleagues when he thought the microphones were switched off after the two men were given little choice but to publicly follow his example.
.....
Some TDs admitted they first learned about the pay cut move from their concerned wives, and such surprise is understandable considering it came just two days after Mr Kenny dismissed a call from Green TD Paul Gogarty for Oireachtas members to take an 8% pay cut as “populist nonsense”.
Mr Kenny’s money-losing move may smack of the gimmicky, especially as the Paymaster General is likely to inform the opposition leader he is unable to take 5% off and redirect it back to public funds, which would rather undermine the whole point of the move.
“Sorry to land you in that there, lads,” - I think that phrase will come back to haunt him.
