A year on, what have the greens achieved?

    A serious question...
the list of things they are proud of are at http://www.greenparty.ie/government/..._in_government
Its not exactly stirring stuff: eagles, consultancy reports, wee grants here and there... Nothing major. How about a real initiative, say making all new houses and developments having to have solar panels? As a for-instance...

they're much more practiced at taking reams of criticism anyway!

otherwise not a hell of lot. i wouldn't mind insofar as i acknowledge they are minor partners in a coalition led by the most popular party in the country and the party most affiliated with developers and big business - except that they refused to take a stand on outrageous corruption and justified it because their positive policies would far outweigh the costs to the body politic that accepting a lying Taoiseach meant. and that hasn't happened by any stretch of the imagination....

New lagging recommendations and the complete loss of their moral authority. Still, well done on the lagging.

My favourite or top3 achievements that would not have happened if the greens were not in government have to be:-

Number 1: 9 June Blue Flags awarded to 80 beaches with excellent water quality

Number 2: 9 Jul: Sargent becomes third Green minister with hybrid car.

Number 3: 7 Aug: Eight white tailed eagles released into Kerry National Park

I was going to put down they had saved the planet but I think that is still hush hush until next years local elections.

Apart from the obvious, I think it is unlikely that Sargent would have become a minister without the Greens being in government.

I expect this thread to lapse into a sorry pastiche of the Monty Python sketch.

Minister Gormley's major achievements would appear to be starving the Social Housing Budget and cutting the Disabled Person Repairs grant for DLRCC by 40%. Even Charlie McCreevy and Mary (Dirty Dozen) Coughlan stopped short of that.

Whats the difference between a lawyer, Gormley and a laboratory rate? Ans, There are some things that a lawyer and a rat will not do.

There is a lot of ability in the Greens. Unfortunately, all I feel they have achieved is to extend permanent FF rule accompanied by the flavour of the day.

Next coalition? Also green, but this time with SF.

Nothing. Simple really. I defy one green on this site to give me an example of what they have achieved.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

Things like the White-Tailed Eagles and Red-Kite re-introduction - I was delighted to see that and I know Gormley was present when the first Red Kites were released into the wild.
But I think this would have happened anyway, regardless of whether the Greens were in Government or not. It could just as easily have been Dick Roche releasing those Kites.
It was a photo-op more than anything really. Its the kind of "small victory" the Greens have had to be content with, having secured zilch on the substantive issues like Tara, Carbon Tax, Hospital Co-Location etc.
Breathing new life into Fianna Fáil is like breathing new life into the Black and Tans.
