Deirdre de Burca gets nod as Dublin MEP candidate

Doesn't say much about GP strength-in-depth in their heartland if they have to go outside the capital to find a candidate for Europe.

    She hasn't a hope.

Re: Deirdre de Burca gets nod as Dublin MEP candidate

    Ahem.

    For a more serious take:
De Burca nominated as Dublin MEP candidate

Senator Deirdre de Burca was the Green Party's sole nominee as a candidate in the Dublin area for the 2009 European elections, as nominations closed at noon today. Roderic O'Gorman and David Geary both local election candidates in Dublin's Castleknock and North Inner City wards respectively submitted applications to be included on the replacement list. All Party members in the Dublin area will be entitled to vote in a selection convention to formally accept Senator de Burca's nomination and decide the order of replacement candidates, in Liberty Hall on Saturday 13 September 2008.

Senator Deirdre de Burca said: "On the close of nominations today I have submitted a list of nominees who wish me to contest the Dublin Election in next year's European Election. I believe I am the person best positioned to increase the Green Party's strong vote in Dublin and to re-take the European Parliament seat held here by my party from 1994 to 2004.

"I believe that I can do this because I am originally from Dublin and, while my political base is in Bray and Co Wicklow, I am very familiar with the issues that affect the Greater Dublin Area. These include planning, transport, waste, infrastructure, education and health, amongst others. I have continued to represent the public in relation to these issues over the years as an elected member of a local authority and, most recently, of Seanad ireann.

"I know it will be a tough contest to win back the Green Party's European seat in Dublin. But I believe it is possible, and it is vital, and I will be seeking the support of party members to achieve this."
"Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable."

Strange choice. Probably realise they haven't a breeze anyway. One safe FF, one safe FG (assuming Mitchell runs again) and between SF and Lab for the third.

Re: Deirdre de Burca gets nod as Dublin MEP candidate

that doesnt make a lick of sense, De Burca is already high profile in Wicklow but probably has no chance of ever being a TD in Wicklow, so why on earth run her in an election in which she has no chance of winning?
It would be far cleverer to run a local rep. from the Dublin area to boost their profile ahead of the next general election.

The Greens should really be able to muster a credible candidate who is actually based in Dublin. Poor form that they can't. Not that they had a chance for the seat anyway.

Because she is the only volunteer for the job and besides they have no other live bodies that they can run. I would not rule out her chances against the septugenarian stickie and mary lou. With some surplus FF & FG votes lying around, the Greens could come through the pack to win the last seat. Odds against though. To save their seat, LAb should persuade Prionsias to step aside and the the Rabbitte loose.
