Twelve local people were arrested at Glengad in county Mayo yesterday, for trying to stop Shell from stripping soil from a Special Area of Conservation. The local community have appealed to the Minister for the Environment to halt the destruction of the fragile habitat and breeding ground for protected species, and have also asked for the Minister for Natural Resources to intervene with Shell. Both Ministers are members of the Green Party.

Willie Corduff, who won the Goldman Award for the Environment last year, was one of those arrested.

Last year, the Rossport Solidarity Camp was removed from the same place by court order after the Parks and Wildlife Service advised that their tents were damaging the dunes and grass of the S.A.C. In the past weeks, Shell have built a compound of port-a-cabins and fencing on the site. Concerns were recently raised by many local people on the surveillance being carried out by Shell security staff. Shell refuse to name the security company which is contracting for them at Glengad.

If they think the New Green party will help them they are sadly mistaken!

More power to them - the Shell to Sea campaign should fold up their tents and go quietly to the nearest local.

    More power to the Greens?

I would have thought Ryan and Gormley are in a uniquely powerful position to deal with this problem.

MINISTER FOR Energy Eamon Ryan has acknowledged an "oversight" in failing to publish latest authorisations for work on the Corrib gas project.

This follows criticism from members of his party and community representatives in Erris over the Department of Energy's failure to make public key information about current work at the Glengad landfall for the pipeline.

A spokewoman for Mr Ryan said the department had activated authorisation of certain consents for the works, but this information was not made publicly available.

This was an "oversight", the spokeswoman said, and all authorisations and new information relating to the department's role would be published on the website from today. Relevant authorisations would also be published in future in the local press, the spokeswoman said.

It's only dirt. Do the environmental nutters think that removing this dirt will trigger the apocolypse?

Did you grow up in a plastic bottle in a concrete bunker in Chernobyl or what? You probably are a troll but all your posts display a lack of an even very basic understanding of how we rely on the planet to breathe, eat and grow.
