Twelve local people were arrested at Glengad in county Mayo yesterday, for trying to stop Shell from stripping soil from a Special Area of Conservation. The local community have appealed to the Minister for the Environment to halt the destruction of the fragile habitat and breeding ground for protected species, and have also asked for the Minister for Natural Resources to intervene with Shell. Both Ministers are members of the Green Party.
Willie Corduff, who won the Goldman Award for the Environment last year, was one of those arrested.
Last year, the Rossport Solidarity Camp was removed from the same place by court order after the Parks and Wildlife Service advised that their tents were damaging the dunes and grass of the S.A.C. In the past weeks, Shell have built a compound of port-a-cabins and fencing on the site. Concerns were recently raised by many local people on the surveillance being carried out by Shell security staff. Shell refuse to name the security company which is contracting for them at Glengad.
