1)Is an infill needed?Cllr Maher said: “This action by the Minister is a significant day for Dublin City as it puts a questions mark over Dublin Port’s ability to infill 52 acres of the bay, as proposed.”
Minister Gormley made the announcement following a comprehensive review of the area and an EU Court of Justice ruling that Ireland is in breach of EU laws by not fully protecting Dublin Bay’s important wild-life habitat.
Cllr Maher said: “Minister Gormley’s speedy response to the EU Court of Justice ruling sends out a positive message that he is putting the protection of the bay high on his agenda. This action is just in time as in November 2007 An Bord Pleanála gave the green light to Dublin Port to apply for planning permission as a Strategic Infrastructure case, which would have fast-tracked the project.
“Furthermore the Minister’s commitment to establish a Dublin Bay Task Force to plan for the future of the bay provides a great opportunity for the Government to protect Dublin Bay's environment and important wild life. The Green Party has been totally opposed to the infill since 1999, the date of the last application by Dublin Port Company to enlarge the port area.”
2)Should we really have someone like Joe Burke as chairman of Dublin Port, only there because he is a member of Bertie's Drumcondra set?
