Gormley tries to prevent Dublin Bay 52 acres infill

Cllr Maher said: “This action by the Minister is a significant day for Dublin City as it puts a questions mark over Dublin Port’s ability to infill 52 acres of the bay, as proposed.”

Minister Gormley made the announcement following a comprehensive review of the area and an EU Court of Justice ruling that Ireland is in breach of EU laws by not fully protecting Dublin Bay’s important wild-life habitat.

Cllr Maher said: “Minister Gormley’s speedy response to the EU Court of Justice ruling sends out a positive message that he is putting the protection of the bay high on his agenda. This action is just in time as in November 2007 An Bord Pleanála gave the green light to Dublin Port to apply for planning permission as a Strategic Infrastructure case, which would have fast-tracked the project.
“Furthermore the Minister’s commitment to establish a Dublin Bay Task Force to plan for the future of the bay provides a great opportunity for the Government to protect Dublin Bay's environment and important wild life. The Green Party has been totally opposed to the infill since 1999, the date of the last application by Dublin Port Company to enlarge the port area.”
    1)Is an infill needed?
2)Should we really have someone like Joe Burke as chairman of Dublin Port, only there because he is a member of Bertie's Drumcondra set?

Time to actually begin moving the port, not increase its size.

Dublin expanded seawards for 1000 years, then we got planning and started to cover Meath & Kildare in concrete.

Maybe it's so they can sell their existing land to developers and move slowly seaward?

Given Peak Oil, are we not likely to be gradually reducing the volume of goods going through the port, not increasing?? Similarly, is this planned airport city business likely to turn into a ginormous white elephant??? Shouldn't we scrap any plans built on the premise of ever expanding quantities of cheap fuel and start spending our not inconsiderable capital on retooling the energy and transport infrastructure, before all the lights go out??

Joe Burke must be feeling very uneasy, his sponsor Bertie is falling on his toy sword and his plans for Dublin Port for himself, DR, TC and Bertie to make a mint on the sale of land for development and acquiring more are starting to look hairy, Cowen will not support this crew and Gormless may spike them as well.
Mahon is also circling around this crew and the keystones are "Talking to Joe" as well.

Yes fergalr. It most certainly is. pity it's a 50 year process but it's time to start. Have a look at Helsinki

Then we can start looking east again and put a few hundred thousand people and jobs on the site. But will Gormley oppose this as well?
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.
