Green leader to raise money for guide dogs

Green Party leader Trevor Sargent is undertaking a challenging fundraiser for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.
On Thursday, September 1st, Mr Sargent and his wife, Cllr Heidi Bedell, will join a group of about 40 travelling to Peru to undertake a high altitude 70-kilometre trek from Cusco to Machu Picchu, the hidden city of the Incas at 15,000 feet high in the Andes mountains.

Their aim is to raise €7,000 for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Each guide dog for the blind costs €35,000.

Mr Sargent said: "As a teacher I had learnt about and admired the work of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind - particularly with Tom and Breege O'Neill in Balbriggan who are an inspiration to anyone who has a visual impairment."

"We are now very hopeful that our target will be exceeded," he added.

I presume these people are going by plane to Peru? Shame on them. I support the work of the Irish Guide Dogs of the Blind but could think of much greener ways of raising money.
We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when creating them

Oh-touché! Then again, he is also highlighting an area of natural beauty that Im sure is threatened by global warming,so it all balances out.

Wouldn't visiting fields of grain be more effective at that.

People probably wouldn't sponsor you charity money for that though.

A more appropriate method of getting sponsorship would be to get an estimate of where the Irish coastline will be in however many years due to global warming and walk or cycle that instead
