    Greens call for Tax Cuts

I like that article on the Green homepage calling for a cut in VAT on "green" products.

See, you lads arn't that different to us after all.

Beleive it or not, I once wrote to Trevor Sargent (my TD) asking him to support a call for the reduction in VAT on secondhand goods as a way of helping recycling.
Mind you it was about 5 years ago but he was very helpful and asked the then Finance Minister , Charlie McCreevey, the relevent question.

The reply was that it was out of the Depts hands because the EU would not allow us to muck around with VAT rates.

I hope now that this issue will come to the fore again.

The fact that I run a business that sells second hand goods is purely coincidental.

The Greens have never claimed to be against tax cuts on anything, so I don't understand why you might be surprised. Believing too much of your former great leader's bull************************ about the Greens bringing on armageddon, maybe?

We've always promoted the idea of tax cuts as environmental incentives, since the foundation of the party.

The difference is that unlike the PDs, we never deluded ourselves into thinking that tax cuts alone were the solution to all of society's ills. Therein lies the reason they've only got two Dáil seats left.

Wow, I never knew. That was a well publicised platform then?

Still it good to know that the Greens and the Progressive Democrats travel the same tax-cutting road.

I look forward to sharing the news with the voters at the next local elections.

The fact that you run a business and are a PD is a even bigger coincidence eh
Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in ancient Greek republics: Freedom for slave owners. For a Real Alternative :

As I already said, if you had been less inclined to believe the rubbish Michael McDowell was spreading about the Greens (John Gormley confronted him about it quite publically, remember?) and read GP policy, you might have been more aware of it. God forbid that PD members/supporters might think for yourselves.

Well I did read it on the greens website did'nt I?

I like to keep myself informed of what the political parties in Ireland are promoting. thats why yours and the FF, FG, Labour, SF and the Socialist Party are all illustrious members of my "Favourites" folder.

The FF, FG site are now full of Progressive Democrat tax cutting measures and when Labour started last year I thought the sky would fall down. But now that the Greens are on board there is only Sinn Fein left to convert.
    Might be toughie, that one.

Dear oh dear, is this the comfort blanket you guys now wrap around yourselves since May 2007? FF were all gung-ho for cutting taxes since 1977, long before anyone heard of the PDs, and on the ladybird book logic that lowering taxes solves all economic problems, we should have had the Celtic Tiger back in the 80s!

I could scatch deeper at the accuracy of the self-portrayal of the PDs as the messiahs of the Irish economy, but it's late and I realise you need something to sooth your electoral wounds with.

Gung ho, no doubt. did they actually do anything about it?

I do hope the Greens talk about cutting VAT is a little more than that;just talk.
Lets see what Senator Boyle is made of. Can he walk the walk?
