How did the Cabinet travel to/from Áras an Uachtaráin ?

On the evening news I saw John Gormley about to board a mini-bus. Was this a Green initiative ? All travel by bus or was it just the two GP minister ?

Does anyone know ? Why was this principled ethical action not reported on ?

Surely this is a first - ditch the mercs and get the bus !

    (Sorry wrong index category before)

    No it wasn't

Charlie Bird or Ursula Halligan both said that the bus was for simplicity. 15 Cabinet Ministers designates traveling in 15 different cars would seem a bit silly since all require a garda escort.

Nothing principled or ethical about actions of the Green party from here on in. They've sold their souls for power, naked ambition has replaced ethics.

    Don't I know that ?

As one of the 67 who voted No last night, I still have my concerns. With such a overwhelming majority voting Yes, I just have to watch and see that it's not a total sell out. I believe at this point we all have a give the Green Party a chance to prove us all (the 67 plus those not present) wrong.

Good luck to John & Eamon

All travelling together in one vehicle was taking a risk. If, forbid, there was an accident, and a number of the nominees were injured or killed it would cause chaos.

    Pragmaticism above principles, I say.

That would have made Dick Roche Taoiseach!

There has been a very long standing tradition of all 15 Ministers taking their own cars to the Áras, and travelling in (very high speed) convoy. Obviously someone decided to change it. I guess it wouldn't have been a good start for the Greens to have everyone travelling two to a car!

The two members of Government who call the shots were chauffeur driven in their two cars in the manner to which they are accustomed. The remainder went coach class. Pecking order set from minute one.

There is a very simple reason why people go in their own cars. If there was an accident, or a terrorist attack, and all the ministers were in one vehicle the entire cabinet could be wiped out.

It is for the same reason that if Princes Charles, William and Harry are travelling abroad they never fly in the same plane. (When they did once, there were questions in parliament and the PM told them never to do that again!) Ditto you never see the US president and vice-president travel together, or all three members of Ireland's presidential commission. It is a basic rule. Putting people together makes the danger of some nutter launching an attack to wipe out everyone greater.

What seems likely to have happened is that the Greens insisted they would go by bike. FF probably went ballistic and so decided to stop that by deciding that ministers would travel in one bus. It was a very very stupid act that must have driven by gardaí charged with ministerial security mad. It takes a big risk and breaks elementary rules on travel.
