The Green Party. Any Lasting Legacies? A Political Assesment of a Former Dáil Party.

Now that the Greens are gone from the Dáil, have their spell in government given us any lasting policies or reforms? It seems to me that many of their policies were too late to implement before the collapse of the 30th Dail.

Perhaps their only legacy will be the quicker collapse of the government than what otherwise might have lasted another few months.

Is the country any better for them ever existing as a Dáil party?

Well, they did push green issues onto the agenda, and Ryan did do some good work in relation to renewable energies.

They still exist - they're more like a cult than a political party

they grew a tiny bit at a time when people had no money worries so the human need to worry meant "carbon footprint" was a buzzword everywhere and D4 yummie mummies and a few sandle wearing vegetarians voted for them.

Waste of space - glad they are gone. They always seemed like pusssies to me.

I think their long term legacy was to permanently discredit the Green movement as a political force in Ireland.

Most people now remember them ( rightly or wrongly ) as the people who propped up the worst government in living memory in order to achieve quite narrow goals.

They didn't appear to care that FF were destroying the country as long as certain Green Pet Projects were prioritized.

Nobody regards them as a viable alternative now, something that would not necessarily have been the case if they had stayed out of govt in 2007.

Yes indeed. That was quite an achievement, but they managed it almost perfectly.

They offered an illuminating insight into just how easily hand-wringing middle-class twatism can be exploited by megabillion scam merchants....Carbon Trading Credits me hole.

I'm also sure some young psychologist will make themselves famous by doing a study into the psychological roots of Greenie misanthropic death-cult weirdness. Greenies all seemed to have a special kind of self-loathing that went way beyond the normal Irish self-flagellating, and reached a frenzied peak of genocidal humanity-hating psychopathy.

Nice summary. Simple and to the point and quite acurate.
