What's the point of the white-house replica; is it a hotel or a place for rich men to go and hold self-serving chats in a suitable environment, before heading to the course for a few rounds?

I'm sure the idea behind it is it will draw in the Yanks, although why anyone would leave America to go to a replica of the White House in Ireland when they have casinos all over the US these days: Between Atlantic City, Las Vegas, riverboat casinos and the fact that every tribe from the Sioux to the First Reformed Yahoo Indians has their own gaming establishment, it's not like the average American is short of places to spend a few hours shovelling coins into machines. Not to mention the casinos in Mexico and Canada and the fact that the dollar is so weak relative to the euro; a trend that is likely to continue.

As for the high rollers, they are still going to go to Monaco or Switzerland or private gaming clubs in London or wherever. Thurles is lovely and all, but it's just not in the same league as Campione d'Italia.

They were claiming the Manchester supercasino would bring in 3,500 jobs, and that's in an urban area with the population of Ireland, an International airport, and motorway links that mean the West Midlands (5.5 million people) is only 1.5 hours by car, and Greater London (13m population) is only 3.5 hours by car.

The developers of this casino claim it will bring in 2,000 jobs, and this will be in the middle of Tipperary, nowhere near an airport, and with a potential local population of 6 million if you include the North.

Someone's getting their sums wrong.

Thurles is one of the most economically deprived areas in Ireland. I am quite familiar with North Tipperary and this is certainly a welcome light shining in the darkness for this area. If the development creates 2000 sustainable jobs as hoped for I don't see how people can knock it. I am genuinely delighted for the people of Thurles to hear this.

i've been to thurles on numerous occasions for hurling matches.

it would be harsh to call it a kip, but there is hardly a single good pub in the entire town.

Hang on a minute here. Can we really blame the Greens here? The council are granting the permission.I can't imagine there are too many greens on that council. I am more than happy to stick the boot in to the hypocritical greens but give the credit for dodgy planning decisions where it's due? the Green's will be a distant memory soon enough anyway.

I will be surprised if this is not appealed to An Bord Pleanala. That will kill the casino project as any decision will probably come after a general election next spring. I doubt very much if Lowry will have a similar level of influence and persuasion over FG and Labour.

I suspect ABP will impose a condition or two, assuming that the County Development Plan allows it. If not then it is going to be rejected.
