Electric cars have failed due to the fact they give limited mileage and require excessive mains power to recharge.

The closest thing is probably the Toyota Prius. which is Petrol Electric Hybrid...more manufacturers are jumping on this bandwagon; so expect more in the next few years.

As for price expect to pay about €18k for a high mileage 04

I read somewhere that the electric car was developed in the 1950s and is being held back until oil runs out. A bit conspiratorial I know so I'll try to dig out where I saw it.

This is info about a car powered by compressed air

    http://www.theaircar.com/

The technology have been in the development stage for the past number of years, with research being held up due to lack of investment. This technology does offer real potential. Even if it was never to become developed as a viable alternative, the striking lack of interest from governments towards this technology shows how serious they are about tackling climate change.

It is interesting that MDI have now signed an agreement with an Indian car manufacturer that could potentially see a hybrid fuel/compressed air car on the road for a fraction of the cost of conventional cars.

The Tesla car is now being released which seeks to redefine electric cars as serious contenders along with the internal combustion engine version. See here. It has a faster acceleration than a porsche and can go for about 200 miles without being recharged.

at $93000 I think it might be a tad expensive -

I would prefer to go with the air compressed car at €5500 even if it doesn't have the acceleration of a porsche

Lads, this thread is a load of horse manure.

Compressed Air is a non runner because most of the energy put into the compressing of the air is wasted in the form of heat.

Electric Technology from the 50s? Gimme a break.

I thought some car-manufacturer had bought the patent for this to kill the technology?
