    Deidre de Burca may not be quitting after all - no job for her in Brussels

    Back in early December it was discussed here on P.ie that Green Party Senator Deidre de Burca was about to quit her Seanad post to take up a position working with Maire Geoghegan-Quinn in her European Commission cabinet.

    However, there is growing suspicion that this is now not the case.

    Phoenix reports that the the news of de Burca's appointment to a Brussels job with MGQ was leaked (to Deidre de Burca's local Wicklow Times) resulting in many reading about the appointment before any decision being made. It now looks like MGQ has changed her mind.

    Cowen appears to have lobbied heavily on MGQ's behalf - following requests from Eamon Ryan and John Gormley.

    Phoenix also notes in the same article that Charlie McCreevy lobbied for Shane Sutherland (who has worked in McCreevy's cabinet - and is the son of Peter) to be given a position but

    But Arthur Beesley in the Irish Times reported yesterday that Shane Sutherland had indeed been appointed to MGQ's cabinet (thanks dailywise to pointing this article out). And indeed no mention of de Burca in the piece.

    But yesterday's IT covered this. Sutherland has been retained by MGQ and de Burca is not in. Somebody called Patricia Riley from the Department of Agriculture, Dave Harmon, an FF handler and some other Irish bod make up the cabinet with two from other countries. Cabinet is full now apparently.

    On a more serious note;

    Young Mr Sutherland was nominated a "EU stud u like" by the BerlayMonster blog due to his come to bed eyes apparently... (back when he joined Charlie's cupboard)

    Prior to the job with McCreevy he was a solicitor with Linklaters in Brussels.

    This story is interesting - who leaked it back in December ?

    Did FF leak it to put pressure on her to take the job ? Was she ever seriously in the running ?

    If it can be confirmed that it was de Burca who leaked it... then her resignation today looks like poor form
