    My week: Paul Gogarty

    RELIVING F-WORD FRIDAY

The Dail rarely sits on a Friday, but with all things budgetary being debated, here I am, about to speak after some emotive contributions on the Social Welfare Bill. The previous night had been torrid and abusive, but water off a duck’s back to this deputy in terms of dealing with heckling. Today I feel a bit raw and speak from the heart, acknowledging the genuine feelings that exist about this year’s cutbacks, but also pointing out what I see as the necessity to make them in the interests of the country. The alternatives being touted do not add up, in my view. It’s the little things that trip you up; Deputy Stagg calls my sincerity into question. I explode. The rest is now YouTube history and the story hits the US in 10 minutes flat. I spend the weekend explaining myself and apologising. Marian Finucane sees both sides of the story, asks all the relevant questions, but also gives time for a full explanation, for which I am grateful.

On Tuesday I receive an official censure over my outburst from the Committee on Procedures and Privileges. “The media attention attracted by your behaviour brought the parliament into disrepute on both a national and international level”. I am tempted to write back stating that the parliament has already been brought into far worse disrepute by the dodgy dealings of some of our elected representatives, but for once I bite my tongue.
A pity you did, on this one.

just reading the same on times online...terrible eejit all the same...or is this the reality of our politicos now that they are blogging??

Either way...shame on him...or his electorate....."With two days to go to Christmas, I am afraid to look at the inbox, which is up to 261 messages requiring a personal response. I decide instead to check up on those YouTube hits of my infamous debate — Ciarán Cuffe tells me they stand at 500,000. Interesting which way the wind blows: blogs are 80% negative; YouTube comments are 65% negative, aided suspiciously by many of the same names time and again; phone messages are 60% negative, but mainly from outside the constituency"........SIGH!!

While he has 'technically' apologised, any apology I have seen, including an email to all GP members, have been back-handed apologies, given with one hand and taken back with the other.

Had he been in opposition and said "f@ck you" to the Govt. I'd give him some cred.
But he was in Govt and said "f@ck you" to some meek elderly guy in an empty chamber.
