McDaid's son to run for the GP in Roscommon/South Leitrim

    http://www.unison.ie/irish_independent/ ... e_id=15271

Talk about trying to put some positive spin on a story

Speaking last night, Donegal North East TD, Dr Jim McDaid (57) said he was delighted with his son's decision.

The former minister, who announced his intention to retire from politics last April but changed his mind three months later, said he would relish the chance to work with his son in an FF/ Green coalition.

Take it the son hasn't been selected by the Green Party to run yet. Or is he even likely to run?

It's not overtly clear in the article is it. But I get the impression that it wouldn't be public new unless he was the confirmed candidate. I can't be sure though.

He's not listed on the Green Party website:

If there is a future, it will be Green.

I've been chatting with Garrett a few times. Him running has been in the pipeline for a while, and he has the support of the local group. Unsurprising really as he put a lot of work into founding it and is very committed to Green ideals. As a new branch there wont be many resources at his disposal but he's smart and articulate so I think he'll make some impact on it.

Garreth has been ratified as the GP's candidate so this is all official now:
Garreth McDaid to run for Green Party in Roscommon-South Leitrim

    Issued: 21 February 2007

Momentum towards the Greens continues to gather pace nationwide

The Green Party has ratified Garreth McDaid as its General Election candidate in the constituency of Roscommon-South Leitrim. McDaid, 35, is a founder member of the independent planning advice service Planning Matters and has campaigned locally on a number of planning and environmental issues. He is the Green Party's Public Relations Officer in the Roscommon-South Leitrim area and works as a technology consultant.

I think the above press release counts as being on the website. I'm sure it'll be up in the election profile section soon.

The poor lad, coming from a broken home, with a father who's prone to drunk driving and a mother who doesn't waste any opportunity in cynically trying to manipulate public opinion in her favour. Nevertheless there's no excuse for joining the tree hugging hippies, I mean isn't there a ready supply of hard drugs in Letterkenny anymore?

I note that Garreth is now advertising his web site here on politics.ie. He's got an interesting article on attitudes to planning expressed by Leitrim County Councillors.
