West Cork Greens to leave the Party?

Tribune.ie 8th November 2009 ... "Greens in west Cork to hold breakaway talks".

From the article ... "Members of the Green party in West Cork, one of the party's traditional bases, are set to hold a crisis meeting to decide whether to disband the local organisation. The west Cork group's meeting has been arranged just days after the Donegal Greens decided to break away from the Green Party and go independent. The west Cork Green organisation is holding a special meeting in Clonakilty on 24 November that will determine its future.

Speaking to the Sunday Tribune, Green party representative in the area Declan Waugh, said: "We have lost about 35% of our members in the last year and that is very significant. Green Party members feel abandoned by the party leadership and by-passed with the rapid pace of change that is taking place.

"The morale in the local group is as low as it has ever been ... My view is that the more active members would be of the opinion that there is no point in continuing to exist."

"To be honest, there is a consensus in the party that disassociating ourselves from the Green Party organisation in the same way that the group in Donegal did last weekend would be a worthless exercise."
    "

And the Green party continues to tear itself apart. Piece, by piece, by piece ...

Gormley and the rest will soon be joining their true party, Fianna fail.

More on this from Declan Waugh's blog ... "West Cork Green from Skibbereen"

Strong words from Waugh ... "I can categorically say right now I now do not have one personal friend or acquaintance who believes that the Green Party are making the right decision in government in regard to NAMA. The universal belief of people I meet is that they will NEVER vote green again, even regardless of their friendship to me or their support for me in the past in my career or in my public endeavours. Without fail they are of the opinion that whatever principals or integrity the party had amount to nothing in the debacle we now find ourselves in with NAMA."

Powerful stuff. And then one of the most incredible things I have ever heard from a Green ...

"As a environmental scientist if I wish to continue to build support in the community for sustainable development and green ideologies I find all of my work in attempting to build a low carbon future is now in jeopardy as a consequence of my association with the Green Party. "

Waugh has the opinion that the Greens in Govt are actually harming the idea of a low carbon future and Green ideologies.

    He finishes ...

    "What a sorry waste,
    What a terrible tragedy
    ."

Sadly, I agree with every single word.

They can't say they weren't warned before 87% of them voted to go into government with Fianna Fail...

They were warned alright ... Ciaran Cuffe's blog ... "Let's be clear. A deal with Fianna Fáil would be a deal with the devil. We would be spat out after 5 years, and decimated as a Party..."

Looks like Ciaran will be proved right beyond his wildest dreams.

It's quite amazing that an organisation that took 20 years to build is being destroyed in less than 2 years. It's tough on the grassrotts activists, many of whom have their hearts in the right place. But when you have opportunists and careerists like Gormley leading the party then this outcome was always inevitable.

I would prefer if they would stay and fight NAMA and then fight for honest valuations until the valuations are completed.
But I understand why they find the leadership so repulsive that their only thought is to get out before their own reputation is further damaged by association.

Will NAMA make the establishment of a sustainable Irish economy more difficult?

    You betcha!

"But do 'climategate' revelations justify the sceptics’ claims that this is “the final nail in the coffin” of global warming theory? Not at all. They damage the credibility of three or four scientists. They raise questions about the integrity of one or perhaps two out of several hundred lines of evidence."

All the disgruntled greens would be better off staying and taking the leadership out, all these people leaving will suit gormley and ryan bigtime.

Maybe. Though I would say that Fianna Fail are soon to be the party of mass emigration... thanks a lot Brians and I hope you like napalm.
