Enda Kenny prefers Greens to PD's

Enda Kenny Prefers Greens to PD's

"If a situation arose where Fine Gael/Labour had 79 or 80 seats and required a small number of extra votes to form a government, and the Green Party and the PDs had those number, my clear preference - while recognising the vote they took at their national conference - would be for the Green Party."

Insisting that the Progressive Democrats will "be completely irrelevant" to the formation of the next government, the Fine Gael leader said: "I believe that the PDs have had their time and wasted it.

At last, some sort of recognition that Fine Gael and Labour won't be able to form a Government without the Greens. They may need more than that too.

In fairness, what else was he going to say?

If he had said the PD's, it would have been in direct contravention of the Pat Rabbitte "get them out - no way no how not ever" position and Pat would have kicked the everliving **** out of him.

I suspect in the absence of having to maintain diplomatic relations with Labour to keep the alternative alive, if asked the question again answering from his own personal viewpoint he would say the PD's.
Those who think they know it all upset those of us that do.........

    Gogarty is the man.

Kenny wasn't so accommodating re. the GP when approached about a cross-party approach to energy policy.

Seems to be the case that maintaining the pretense of Opposition is more important than in engaging in responsible Government.

the political neutering of enda kenny continues apace. of course he would prefer the PDs but apart from madcap schemes he can't say anything he thinks because he tethered himself to lab so early.

20/20 vision in hindsight but Mullingar was a disaster but they can't go back. The greens are the real opposition, they should do really well

Agreed. I haven't seen one disinct, sensible policy coming out of Fine Gael since the 1980s. It's not good enough lads just to say that "we're not the other lot". You need to have something new, something sensible and something that might not always be popular with every segment of the electorate.

Paul Gogarty put it straight when he spoke of tweedledum and tweedledee. People don't want FF-lite, they want a real opposition. The Greens are now the real opposition as Cambeca said in the last post.

I see that Trevor Sargent has now added to Gogarty's comments ruling out any talk of pacts until after the election. The message coming out from the Green boyos is that if you want a real alternative, make sure the Green Party get enough seats to hold the balance of power.

    Go Greens!

Kenny chose to talk about lowering himself to include the Greens rather than deal with Deasy and English. That speaks volumes and shows how much in disarray Fine Gael really are. Like a millionaire playboy, lots of money to spend but nothing of substance to spend it on.

What were Deasy and English thinking of? It might make them look good, but it doesn't help their party or their leader.

No doubt Inda is wishing he had a Paul Gogarty on his team, someone who is not afraid to be controversial but doesn't criticise his party in public, whatever about in private.

Do you know something we don't? Has Gogarty said something critical in private?
