    Elected Mayor

Perhaps Brocolli could help here but with serious talk of a directly elected Dublin Mayor circa 2011 what are the chances of the Green Minister having begun the process for an elected Mayor in the lifetime of this government ?

Of course with talk of an elected Mayor there is inevitabely speculation as to who would occup it.
If the position was elected in the morning is there anybody who would be odds on favourite ?

The Green paper has been published with plans for a directly elected Mayor of Dublin and options for other local authorities such as Galway City to decide on putting in place a directly elected Mayor themselves. This is on track and there should be a directly elected Lord Mayor of Dublin before the Greens leave Government. I'd love to see a directly elected Mayor of Galway. I'm sure that Padraic Conneely would be the obvious candidate if the local papers are to be believed.

Brocolli, with 7 'opposition' votes surely anything could happen. FF/PD/Indo SF, if they were to unite behind one of the 'coalition' then game set match. For example if the 7 opposition disliked Connelly more than say Brocolli or Indo Catherine Connolly then they could back Brocolli or C.Connolly !! Just a thought

    Re: Elected Mayor

Im sure lots of people want to be the first elected Mayor so a big name such as a T.D could go for it, someone like Mickey D.
If every party nominates someone then straight away there's quite a few but surely there has to besome criteria for independents running besides being nominated and seconded otherwise there'll be a very long ballot sheet. Something like 100 signatures of registered voters wouldn't be too much to ask for. even with that sort of a criteria I can see dozens of candidates running for the position

Interesting ! I concur with what seems to be a theme here which is No to Connelly. As someone already wrote its possible for someone other than Connelly to become Mayor

well the pact held and Connelly is Mayor....

assuming he doesnt self implode etc -- it augurs well for him to retain his seat .. the fact that the pact lasted the full term suggests that should Fg / Lab together with NoB or an indo get to 8, then a likely continuation.

state of the PD's in 12 months time is hard to call..will Grealish and his Galway councillors have largely returned to mother ship by then?

any new Mayor, for the sake of the city, tone down your antics and dont let it go to your head..

That's an awfully dangerous assumption to make! I'd say it's 50-50.

Here is a good question (if I may so myself) but who would be a good elected Mayor of Galway who is NOT a politican. Who outside the bubble of Galway politics would be a good elected Mayor ?
