7 days is just greed and some of the racing is rubbish.
Even the supposedly blue riband races are often low quality certainly compared to the hype of the Festival itself.

The Galway Races has long shed itself of its friendly family fun event and like many things in Bertie's ireland, has been hijacked by gombeenism and wannabees.

Most old timer racing fans still go but definitely don't liek the direction the Festival has taken in the last 5-10 years.

    No, I wont be attending.
Standing 6 deep at a bar for a few pints of slop in plastic glasses listening to some sweaty fool ************************eing on about his property killings is well down my list for my holiday plans.

What the hell is gombeenism? Its a made up word! You dont like the races so you blame Bertie and his Gombeenism for it! You have to resort to made up words to express yourself. And also wannabee whats?

The racing comes second to the occasion anyway.
Most people that go have no interest in horse racing.
It is good craic. More a social occasion than a racing occasion.
If you want to avoid the 6 deep at the bar situation go on one of the quieter days.
Also they have opened the new stand and the facilities will be much better (might only be 3 deep instead). Plastic glasses are par for the course at these events.
Many people come to Galway for the week but never go near the racecourse.
There is good fun in town, with street theatre and live music in all the pubs.
The quality of the racing is very suspect and always was. Especially now as the good horses are now spread accross 7 days of racing. But if you are going for the craic who cares. The excitment of seeing your horse coming in is the same regardless of the quality of the race.
As for listening to people going on about their property killings, you could go this year and revel in them taking the hit of the property crash. Hey, you could suggest that you look forward to buying their house cheap after repossession.
