    Directly Elected Mayor

This proposal is the one thing in my opinion which has emerged as a result of the Galway Water Crisis. When every councillor collectively is passing the book and now the Manager is. Shouldn't we have someone who is accountable to the people. Isn't this a solution?

Someone has to be accountable. Good luck finding someone brave and honest enough to face the general public.

personal think all major cities should have a directly elected mayor with exec power, budget and a 4-5 year term. directly elected mayors have been good for many cities, london (even if i'm not a fan of Red Ken), new york, etc

There wouldn't be a hope of shifting power from the unelected officials to an elected mayor in this country

Yes I think it could work. At least they would face the people and be accountable unlike the manager who is not elected or accountable.

If you could see how smug the manager is about his position in relation to the elected councillors you would see how difficult it would be to shift him

This has been FG policy since the local elections and we are proposing to extend this to all county councils throughout Ireland.
Local accountability is a necessity to combat many problems we face (community policing, local infrastructure, commmunity services and life generally) and it has been this governments policy to take decisions away from local residents via elected politicians, and into the hands of unaccountable appointed officials. The City and County Managers rather than administrators are now basically CEOs who make decisions without recourse to local concerns.
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

FF/PD were going to bring this in a few years ago but they backed down, apparently FF's own backbenchers didn't like the idea.

Making the elected officials accountable makes a lot of sense. The way I understand it, the Mayor's role is largely ceremonial and the manager and other Dublin-appointed officials make the real decisions and have the real power. We can't vote them out if we don't like what they're doing - strange democracy! Seems the manager should report to the mayor, not the other way around.

How do we go about changing this by the way? Any experience anyone?
