    What does Galway West need?

Coming up to the election I think its about time we made it clear what are the big issues effecting Galwegians, how can they be addressed and who is most likely to address them. Is clean drinking water a massive decider and if so who is best to address it? Other topics like local commerce, social issues, even who should we vote tactically to ensure that Galway has someone representing us in one of the main parties in the Dail.

Also to add more fun, which democraphic do you think will support which party or canditate e.g would Business people support FF and PDs?, Would Renmore people support McCormack? etc.

How does the city break down both geographically and socially? for example Who should a single mother, an elderly man, a first time buyer, a small business owner support, a Knocknacarra Resident support etc?

    Water, obviously.

Proper public transport especially for the commuter belt (Tuam, Athenry, Oranmore, Barna etc) and something done about Claregalway, the traffic is getting ludicrous

Proper planning - we've got all the people living on the west and all the jobs on the east.

Somebody to do a bit of joined-up-thinking. We've got 2 universities, a highly skilled workforce, an ocean and endless wilderness in Connemara. Alternative energy R&D heaven. A city with thousands of highly-skilled engineers and 2 colleges should also be right at the forefront of every sunrise industry going.

Better transport links to Shannon and Knock and Dublin

What we don't need is a pointless road to nowhere costing hundreds of millions.

    Water is the obvious one.
    More bus lanes.
    The western-rail corridor.
Also someone who will ensure sensible development of the CIE Eyre Square site. It has great potential but will probably be messed up.
    Less drunks in Eyre Square

Was I the only one to notice how these two threads rather brilliantly ended up one underneath the other?

    "What does Galway west need?"

FF: "A carefully orchestrated leak campaign"

I suppose it's water under the bridge now, though. (groans..)

TDs from the main political parties represent their parties, not their constituents.

True. When FF is in power we have a Minister(O Cuiv) and a Jr. Minister(Fahy) representing us. If Labour make up part of the Govermnent Michael D will more than likely be one of their Ministers. If FG is in power McCormack is most experienced but will never be a Minister. Also O Brolochains wont be a minister, neither will Grealish.

Having Ministers from your area is advantageous to your constituency. Consider while Fahy was minister for the Marine we got the Marine institute here in Galway. And clearly with O Cuiv as the Minister responsible for the Gaeltacht he is going to look after Galway Wests Gaeltachts, hence why he commands so much support. When Micheal D was Minister he set up TG4 in Galway. When your TD you cant do much, when your minister you will say benefits to your constituency above others.

So tactically would an FF/ Labour Government would be best for Galway West?
If all politics is local would you not want the local boys having the most power. And that I think is what the Normal punter in Galway thinks coming up to this election and its why Fianna Fail command so much support in this City.

Correct me if Im wrong! its only a theory.
