It is hard to believe that we are in the 21st century sometimes.. A 10 year old girl married to an 80 year old codger escaped and her father (yes you read that right) returned her. I trust that the Saudi ambassador will be hauled in for a carpeting and the feminists will be outside the Saudi embassy 24/7 in protest at this gross violation of women's (and children's rights).

Mind you there are some posting on other threads on p.ie who believe that traditional religious views of marriage should be allowed to dictate civil law on marriage. Go figure.
I think many human rights organisations are working on the issue though. I seem to recall Amnesty doing quite a bit on early marriage in African and Arab countries.
Why just feminists?
Nothing will change until MEN stand up and protest about these things - fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, lovers, male politicians, sportsmen, just plain decent males, to show thier abhorrence of the appalling treatment of females.
Is this a new way of organising marriage in Saudi? Doubt it, all about money and dowries and the like.
And the women are still walking two steps behind the men as always. Was her father returned his little daughter after all. Sad.

Indeed it is vile; and of course women everywhere are apoplectic. Well actually no, they are not. But why not ?

Where are the decent, honourable men who should be leading this fight - the males who run these regimes might listen to other men.
Isn't that their law? Not right for us but weren't we doing the same up until a few centuries ago. Do we have the right to impose our ideas of right and wrong on other cultures? If so, are they equally allowed to impose their ideas on us?

I think I would be quite sure about the source of a story before I would make a thread about it, I am taking a look and I am finding that the same sites that circulated the story of the young brides getting married to Hamas en-masse which proved to be utter BS are also reporting this.
The Huffington post, enough said!
