SILVIO BERLUSCONI’S daughter Marina, who is ranked the 10th most powerful businesswoman in the world by Fortune magazine, has stepped into the sex scandal swirling around her father to denounce attempts to “stab him in the back” and insist that he is free to have a private life.

Marina, 43, came to his defence after Giampaolo Tarantini, a businessman under investigation for alleged drug and prostitution offences, told prosecutors in Bari, southern Italy, that he had supplied 31 women for the prime minister’s parties between last September and January.

Tarantini said five of them had slept with Berlusconi, but the prime minister had not known they were paid to do so.

Mr Berlusconi is no stranger to controversial comments. In 2003 he likened a German member of the European Parliament to a Nazi camp guard and in 2005 he suggested that he had wooed Finnish president Tarja Halonen to ensure her backing for Italy to host the European Food Safety Authority.

SILVIO BERLUSCONI’S cutting remark about a female rival’s lack of beauty has stirred a rare public backlash from thousands of Italian women who had largely kept silent about the prime minister’s womanising and sex scandals.

About 97,000 Italian women have signed the "Women offended by the premier" appeal after Berlusconi told the matronly, bespectacled leftist Rosy Bindi that she was "more beautiful than intelligent" in a swipe at both her looks and brains.
