I checked into this and it turns out that this story is not true. The New Jersey reporter who reported this either made it up or used an unreliable source. He even got the Rabbi's name wrong. The Rabbi did not renounce his son and he is not sitting Shiv'ah. The Rabbi did deliver a sermon denouncing Jews informing on other Jews, but in the context of making false accusations when informing.Originally Posted by rhonda15

I rang the Rabbi's office myself.
It seems there is a bit more to this story than meets the eye. From what I can gather, and this is only second hand information, but it seems that Solomon Dwek agreed to wear a wire tap as part of a plea bargain. He is accused of defrauding a bank of millions. He agreed to implicate Rabbis in return for some sort of a plea bargain. He agreed to go to Rabbis and he didn't confirm they were involved in past crimes but tried to involve them in a crime. He went to various Rabbis and he told them that he was down on his luck and he could cash cheques for them if they gave him a small percentage in return. He told them that they were obligated to help him by doing business with him. All of these conversations and meetings were recorded. Most of the rabbis he went to refused. I don't know the law in America, but it seems that cashing cheques for someone comes under a law relating to money laundering. So maybe the Rabbis, who were arrested, did willingly break the law regarding money laundering. Maybe they didn't realise this was the law and they thought they were helping a Jewish businessman who was down on his luck. They would have known him because he was the son of a Rabbi. Maybe it was entrapment for whatever reason.
