The people of Afghanistan might have a reason to be genuinely grateful to the British when they build roads, schools, install local services and a national health service like they have themselves. But they won't get anything but bullets, now will they?

You might want to educate yourself on Bin Laden. It was never about him; he's another false prophet.

And they would do all that if the Taliban insurgency wasn't keeping them occupied. So how do they fight the Taliban? With custard creams?

The poppy is grown where the Taliban have control. If they wanted to grow poppy they could grow it undisturbed in the parts of Afghanistan not under Taliban sway in peace and quiet. I don't why I am arguing. The idea that the Brit government wants to grow heroin is outlandish and belongs in the realm of looladum.

So the people of Afghanistan live in the permanent battlefield whilst the British Army do what they do, i.e. kill people and break things. Please refrain from the tired false opposition of trying to paint me as a Taliban supporter and thus a wife-beater, Islamic loony etc. Give me an example of where this kind of intervention has led to anything but permanent war?

The Brit foreign office tried to get a bill before parliament to allow opium production under license. You don't 'grow heroin' either, it is made from processed opium.

The Taliban isn't in Helmand, it's rival drug producers. The Taliban are in the Swat region. The Brits have too much control over the territory for the bumper opium crops to be grown without their notice. Satellites and air recon can tell them what's growing in any part of Helmand.
