    1. There was no extrenal element to the protets on Irans streets, even the Ayotallah accepts that.

    2. Mousavi is as much an element of the "regime" as Ahmedinejad. The regime is the theocracy of which neither is directly a part and neither has attempted to overthrow.

What has been and remains at the centre of this Iranian affair, not western perceptions of it, is the split amongst the clergy in Iran.

An interest take from one if Irans top Clerics:

Right from the get-go this had a strong whiff of failed colour revolution.

Which is not to say that the dissent and bad feeling among some Iranians were manufactured - they never are, nor do they need to be, in these situations. The media coverage in particular, was hysterical and grossly out of proportion to events on the ground, which never came close to the kind of ground swell seen 30 years earlier. It was mildly comical to watch CNN report from their "Iran desk" - "Live. Breaking News. People have been seen gathering on the corner of Vali ASr street in Tehran. More soon'.

People? Gathering? In a city of 14 million? Stop the press!
