    We Are All Neda
    A new website commemorates Neda

"We did not throw rocks at them.
    We cried `We want freedomī
    They shot us."

Agree Asi-Irish. There have been very few shootings and we know very little about how they happened. Dunk, who do you think did this: what are the possibilities ?

    Id agree with the main line, as reported on democracy now feature today;

One of those killed was an unarmed young woman named Neda Sultan, who was reportedly watching the protests with her father when she was shot by a member of the Basij.

    Little more on the Basij

AMY GOODMAN: And the Basij, the paramilitary forces that are known for—have killed a number of people?

GEORGE McLEOD: I had a little run in with them about three nights ago. And they are absolutely terrifying. This is a sort of a quasi-legal, hard-line Islamic group that is basically above the law, because they’re said to be following a religious law. And they basically roam the streets after 10:00 at night, armed with chains, sticks, belts, anything they can get their hands on, and they beat anybody they suspect of being protesters. They searched cars, set up checkpoints. And I personally find them terrifying. They pulled me off a bike the other day and eventually let me go, but it’s not a good situation at nighttime here.
From DNīs Friday show, before the death of Neda and others:

As Part of Crackdown on Journalists, Iranian Security Forces Detain and Beat Canadian Journalist

Looking at this Twitter blog it seems theres big big crackdown on cameras etc, to prevent further truths getting out...

This is what that page says:

KOUROSS ESMAELI: Well, the killings—the official news agencies have said that at least seven were killed on that day. And the word is that the majority of the killing is being done by the Basij, by the paramilitary group that is un-uniformed and that has been within the Islamic Republic ever since the days of the Iran-Iraq War in the early ’80s.

By my accounts and by people who I’ve spoken to in the streets, the way that the killings have happened have been through knives, largely, which means basically that the Basij, which has lost its arms—in a few years ago, they asked the Basij to turn in their guns. So people know that the Basij carry knives and other form of ammunition with them. And that is the way the majority of the killings have happened.

The most famous killing, the killing that has become most sort of renown across the world, has been with Neda Sultan, who was killed by a sniper. And that could very well have been a Basij who had not turned in his guns, or it could have been done by—

AMY GOODMAN: This is the young woman.

KOUROSS ESMAELI: The young woman, who we showed.

AMY GOODMAN: Who was there with her father watching what was happening.

KOUROSS ESMAELI: Yes, yes. That could very well have been the official—the uniformed military forces in Iran.

They don't know who did it but they suggest it was probably not a member of the Basij

Did you watch the video that Asi-Irish posted on Venezuela ? Are you aware that there are US sponsored jihadists in Iran?

Until there is some evidence the verdict is out as to who shot her.

From the description, she was shot through the heart by a sniper from some distance. That sounds most unlike Basij.

    ندا آقا سلطان

Neda means "voice" or "calling" in Persian, and she has been referred to as the "voice of Iran" and "a symbol of pro-democracy protesters battering the Islamic regime" in the world

Brazilian author of "the alchemist" Paulo Coelho wrote on his blog that he is friends with the doctor on the scene who tried to save Neda after the bullet entered her heart

Yeah im familiar with the Venezualan situation and have talked with some of the [ame="http://video.google.es/videoplay?docid=5832390545689805144"]Irish lads [/ame]caught out there at the time

What makes it hard to make out in Iran is that all "balanced" international media are being given the boot, so the snippets we get from youtube, through links etc paint a fragmented picture of the reality. Its clear though, there is massive call, both within and outside of Iran to stand up to the rigging. It is now clear, there was rigging.

We will see how things go

The same doctor is quoted in Der Spiegel as saying she was shot through the heart by a sniper. Are you still sure that she was killed by Basij as you asserted previously?

I find it quite amazing that the US is calling for protests in Iran to be allowed when from now on protesters in the US are now considered by the DoD to be 'Low Level Terrorists'.

Antiterrorism training materials used by the Department of Defense teach that public protests should be regarded as "low-level terrorism," according to a letter of complaint sent to the department by the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California.

"Teaching employees that dissent on issues of public concern is something to be feared, rather than encouraged, is a dangerously counterproductive use of scarce security resources, making us less safe as a democracy," Northern California ACLU staff attorney Ann Brick and ACLU Washington national security policy counsel Michael German wrote in the letter to Gail McGinn, acting undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness.

"DOD employees cannot accomplish their mission of protecting our nation and its values unless they understand that those values encompass the right to criticize our government through protest activities," they wrote. "It is imperative that they are taught the difference between political, religious or social activism and terrorism."

cf, perhaps not Basij, perhaps old guard.

both sides seem intent on ending the peaceful protests, tonight seems quite according to tehran bureau,
dispatch from iran: no protests [today] ... streets dead ... no one dares mess with sepah
Who do you think shot her, what has to be gained by their action, has it backfired...
As more people are watching the vid, seeing the images, becoming angry.... What is that leading to?
