Ken Lay dead of heart attack

    Ireland.com

Former Enron chief executive Ken Lay has died of a heart attack.

Lay talks outside of a courthouse after the close of his bank fraud trial in May
He died after taking ill at his holiday home in Colorado, according to reports.

Lay (64) and another former Enron boss Jeffrey Skilling were found guilty by a Texas jury in May of fraud and conspiracy in one of the biggest corporate scandals in American history.

Lay was found guilty of all six counts against him and Judge Sim Lake also convicted the Enron founder on separate charges of bank fraud and he faced a sentence of up to 165 years in prison. He was due to be sentenced, along with Skilling, on September 11th next.
What do people think? Has the full truth of Enron and Bush's connections died with him, or is it more likely to come out now that Lay isn't in a position to respond?

A good thing this happened in a functioning and enlightened democracy like the US. Otherwise questions might be asked at how convenient this is.

Guys not to sound too conspiracy theory-ish, and I know he was 64, but mark my words, Sadam will be found dead from a heart attack before too long. Same with Milosevic, they cant execute him or they will make a martyr of him, and if they leave him in jail he will never go away. Best thing for everyone if he just had a heart attack.

Lay wasn’t much different. What message would it send to bush’s other high profile business partners if he was to be put away foe the rest of his natural for fiddling the books?

Im sure the truth is as messy as Mississippi mud wrestling, and bush would look about as clean if it got out. No need to worry about that now though.

Yeah but I sense it'll only be a matter of time before the conspiracy theorists start making up s***

Look Emmet, we all know Bush had him whacked to prevent him from spilling the beans! Duh, obvious really! Of course it wasnt the financial irregularities I am am talking about, but the plans to create cloned arriors for Bushs' 'New Republic'. Ever seen the way he and Cheney are together? Always two are there, one the master, one the apprentice....I feel a vast disturbance in the force and we all know how easy it is for a sh**it lord to bring on a coronary....

I think the connections with the Bush administration, though important and admittedly a bit smokey, are really only a side issue. There are lessons to be gleamed from the whole Enron debacle far beyond the issue of campaign finance and political donations. The issue regarding Bush only stretches as far as to whether any favours were done in return for political donations, for the President could not have known of their accountancy practices.

I imagine Enron will become the textbook example on the necessity of government regulation and certain controls on the "free" market. The idealogues behind Enron were the most ardent advocates of deregulation, and ultimately they were the biggest enemies to that cause. It was genuine irony, unlike Morissette's plethora of examples.

Also, any economists trawling through these pages may be able to explain, for I am of little brain on the issue, the implications Enron might have on mark-to-market pricing. Another idea pioneered by the organisation, Skilling particularly.

But more locally, in Ireland, I think we could learn a good deal from how the American authorities clamped down after Enron's practices were revealled. 165 years, and for a white collar crime! The first lesson: end this melarkey of concurrent sentencing. The second lesson: treat white collar crime like any other.
