Irish Minister for Health Votes Against own Government!

    This is the story.

Ok, I'm being a bit misleading here - Gibbons is Irish (from Roscommon), but he's Minister for Health in Wales.

The story has caused a lot of hilarity this side of the water.

So be it! We can take it! We have had a whole cabinet full of Irish jokes for the last few years so a further spate will make no difference!

Very funny story all the same, Trefor.

He should be allowed to correct his mistake. It could be the fault of the technology that makes such a mistake possible. I've heard of other similar examples in other countries where someone pressed the wrong button. The vote did not make a difference to the result, but the person who made the mistake was allowed to correct the official record of proceedings.

The mistake wasn't the fault of technology. It seems that Brian was ranting in the direction of the rather unruly opposition benches as he cast his vote, & simply pressed the green rather than the red button. It's on film.

It did make a difference - the vote was 28 - 26 - it would have been 27 - 27 & the vote would have gone to the Llywydd. He's a Plaid member, but would have been under pressure to back the government.

Under standing orders there's no way you can change your vote after you cast it. If such a mechanism existed it would cause chaos.

Yes. That is true. What I'm getting at really is that techology often makes it easier to make mistakes like this. And putting two similar looking buttons beside each other could allow that to happen. There needs to be some pretty significant visual feedback when you select your vote, and then a separate action for casting it. Of course, once the vote is cast, it cannot be changed.

If you'r an idiot you can always get it wrong - put up your hand after the wrong call, put a cross in the wrong box etc. It isn't by any means unknown for councillors to vote (by show of hands) against motions they themselves have proposed - because of idiocy rather than inconsistency.

The joke with poor Gibbons is that he voted for a hostile inquiry into the department he himself is responsible for. He must have had a bad night.
