It is actually a good move on Brown's part... not that anything he can do will make a huge difference. However, if he intends leading Labour into the next election and he intends that to be in a year's time, the appointment of a media friendly, public popular and successful person like Sugar is exactly what will give an increased sense of direction to his Government, albeit probably only marginal.

Rubbish rumour. Sugar was appointed as a business advisor by Brown back in June 2007:

Gordon Brown has recruited Sir Alan Sugar to advise him on business.

The Amstrad boss and star of BBC1's The Apprentice will sit on a special "business leaders' council" alongside other industry figures.

"I look forward to making my contribution to the business leaders' council, which will act as a consultative body to the Department of Trade and Industry," Sir Alan said.

"There has always been a difficulty in getting business leaders involved in direct government, due to a requirement for them to relinquish their various business holdings.

"I'm delighted that this newly formed business leaders' council enables myself and other business leaders to make a major contribution.

"I look forward to this new role and assisting the new prime minister as best I can."

No 10 has yet to officially announce the formation of the council.

The council will meet two or three times a year and will advise Mr Brown on whether government policy is helping or damaging Britain's competitiveness.

Everyone knows that he was appointed a business advisor by Brown two years ago - Sugar and a whole host of other business leaders.

What is reported today... and is reported by Sky News, The Press Association, The Guardian, The Telegraph and the Independent, is a much more Government based job that sitting on an advisory committee with 30 other business leaders. It is not expected that he will join the cabinet.

Sitting on an advisory committee with other business leaders is pretty much what he does now, his appointment as an enterprise advisor isn't that much of a step up.

He's obviously not going to be in the cabinet.

He can't be because he's not an MP and he's not a Lord.

It may be technically possible for someone to be appointed to the British cabinet without being an MP or a Lord (although I'm not sure about that), but it would be politically impossible.

Edit: looks like he's getting a peerage after all!

Alastair Darling for the exchequer....oh sorry, celebrities?

I thought you were going for sheer comedy?

What about Eamon Dunphy as their media advisor?

Him and Brown could try out-grump each other?
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.
