    World Cup blackout in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- Islamic militiamen who have seized control of the capital fired guns in the air and cut electricity to makeshift cinemas to prevent Somalis from watching the World Cup, witnesses said, and some enraged residents were planning to hold a protest Sunday.

The Islamic Courts Union broke up gatherings to watch the soccer matches on Saturday, witnesses said. A strict interpretation of Islamic law often bans Western films and television as immoral.

I know this seems like a minor event, but it does point to this new government creating a Islamic regime which is needless to say worrying and it does seem to contradict their claims that they weren't going impose Islamic law in Somalia.

Interesting story but which strand did you want to discuss? You mention Islamic law but Islamic prohibition against football is unproven yet in these articles, and certainly not an issue in other Muslim countries Iran. Other strands could be civil war, US backing for warlords, Islamic-Christian tensions in this part of africa?

I don't know much about this conflict but I'm against whoever is trying to stop people watching football.
