    Google re-think on China

Has Google begun recalibrating its Evil Scale? If it hasn't yet, it certainly seems to be considering it. Addressing reporters in Washington yesterday, Google co-founder Sergey Brin admitted that the company has compromised its principles by acceding to Chinese censorship demands and hinted that Google could adjust its stance in the country in the future.

"We felt that perhaps we could compromise our principles but provide ultimately more information for the Chinese and be a more effective service and perhaps make more of a difference," Brin said. "Perhaps now the principled approach makes more sense. It's perfectly reasonable to do something different, to say, 'Look, we're going to stand by the principle against censorship and we won't actually operate there.' That's an alternate path. It's not where we chose to go right now, but I can sort of see how people came to different conclusions about doing the right thing."

It's despicable of them to have ever agreed to censor the web for Chinese citizens or anyone else who uses their service. Which is why I am boycotting them.
Of course, the NUJ are currently advocating a boycott of Yahoo! too for precisely the same thing, and as a good trade unionist I have joined that boycott too.
Mind you, now I can't find anything out at all...

This is welcome. If it comes to anything and isn't just a cynical PR stunt.

One wonders though the merits of actually taking a principled stand, after all that's all it is, the Chinese Government shall no doubt ignore such a development (probably relegated to the back pages of newspapers, if it would appear at all) and probably end up doing what is seems to do with almost every product across the planet, either stealing similar techniques used by Google or developing their own similar search engine that shall serve their own purposes, nothing shall change by taking this stand.

Ha! Just hours after their shameful behaviour is highlighted on my blog, the company changes tack. Libero strikes again!

Well google seems to be losing it anyway. I have been using some of the other search engines more and more lately and I have found googles relevance to be dropping slightly.

'Don't be evil'? Easy to say when your the indie outsider, but as soon as page and brin saw the floatation value I bet they cursed that little pearl of wisdom! People should also remember that brin was more interested in targeted marketing and advertising before they struck gold with google.

Nowt wrong with that I say, but don't try and cloak yourself in righteousness to peddle your wares please.
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.
