Minister Lenihan announces €500,000 in aid for the victims of earthquake in Indonesia

Minister Lenihan this morning announced that the Irish Government would provide €500,000 to aid the relief effort following a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that has appears to have severely damaged parts of the city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java in Indonesia just before 6 a.m. local time or 2300 GMT on Friday (May 27th ).

In making the announcement Minister Lenihan said;

“It is still early and we are only receiving news as to the extent of the loss of life and injuries following the earthquake in Java, Indonesia. It is clear at this point however that over 2000 people have lost their lives and many more are trapped and injured.”

“We are making an initial contribution of €500,000 to the International Federation for the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and the other humanitarian agencies that are ready to assist in the immediate relief effort. We will of course keep monitoring the situation, and be ready to assist further if required. As yet it is unclear if any Irish people are missing or have been injured.”

I think we should also consider sending troops to work as oart of the relief effort. I admit, its semi selfish, but they get well trained, committed, personnel helping out and our lads get experience in disaster management. A win win situation (relatively speaking of course - its certainly not a 'win-win' situation for those deceased or displaced).
