RAR protest 2pm today at St Pat's- Counter protest planned?

Folks the RAR intend to hold a protest at St Pats today at 2pm.

Given that ordinary working class Dubliners have let these people know in no uncertain terms what they think about the antics of those occupying the Cathedral it should be interesting to see what happens this afternoon.

Anyone else for turning up today to make our presence felt?

Today is the day, now is the Time!

So are you actually going to go there or are you just trying a bit of troll baiting for the assorted left and righteous loons?

    Trolling probably.

I was there for the guts of two hours last night and it was clear from the number of conversations people engaged in with the protestors that there was a massive range of views and there were plenty of working class Dubs on both sides of the discussions.

The first argument I got involved in was with a chap who objected to the hunger strikers in the Cathedral as it was sacrilege, but then maintained he was an atheist anyway. He was one of the most woefully uninformed gentlemen I have met on this issue, insisting the men inside were from Iraq for example, and that they were probably armed.

One chap supported their right to stay but couldn't support their decision to go on hunger strike or threatent to kill themselves, which is fair enough certainly and would be very close to my own feelings on the subject.

A third maintained Afghanistan wasn't as bad as all that and McDowell was the bets Justice Minister we had ever had and they should all be sent back. There were a number of others.

A number of cars honked support as they drove past the picket.

As for the racists, for the last three or four days there has been a fairly constant presence from two chaps in particular. Ironically, judging by his heavy Australian accent, one is no stranger to immigration himself. They've been openly goading some of the young people in the area into anti-immigrant shouts, while preferring not to get involved in physical confrontations, one of them who, accidentally I have to say I think, struck an anti-racist activist was running away before people realised he was the one who'd hit her.

No doubt, some of the local people genuinely believe in it, but one of the chaps holding a 'Let them die' poster last night had been holding a Let them stay' poster on Tuesday evening, suggesting at least some of them are just attracted by the controversey and ambivalent on the issue. As for others, racism is always more prevalent in working class and disadvantaged areas as people profit from setting two weak communities, working class people and immigrants, against each other.

There is a rumour going round by text message that the racists might try something today but frankly if their 'shows of strength' of the last week have been anything to go by they'll hide behind the cops with their hoods up and faces covered and occasionally chant something.

The racist right cannot be allowed to organise in Ireland . Has anyone been monitoring the identities of the outsiders , such as the Australian stirring the trouble ?

I am led to believe they might have wandered into the frames of a couple of activist journalists present on the scene.

Clearly, publicity whores of the highest order.

A counter demonstration would be ok - but if racist chanting happens, it wouldn't be good.

"Activist journalists" - do you mean anarchists with cameras, Cain?

If you have a gang of racists sick enough to mock a group of people on hungerstike your bound to have chanting . Thats what generally happens when racist sickos gather anywere .

    merle haggard,

You liberals have lost the arguement on this matter, they are not supported by the rule of law, the UN and the church of ireland. Its not racist to oppose these Afghans - they are trying to blackmail the state.

By the way - I know members of the 32 County S M who are pretty pissed off with what is going on. They (RAR) are trying to use Sands anniversary as a vehicle of publicity.

    Roll on the counter protest.
