Aung Suu Kyi facing another 7 years in jail

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/.../breaking1.htm

This wonderful dignified and very brave woamn is facing 7 years in jail after an American (whom she didn't invite) entered her compound where she was under house arrest. (irish Times link above) The Burmese junta is one of the most brutal regimes on the planet yet it commands very little media attention especially when contrasted with the extensive coverage given to other sexier conflicts. If ever Obama could chalk up easy brownie points, taking out this odious regime by force as the head of an international coalition would be it.

Isn't it such a coincidence that every time her house arrest is almost up along comes a new charge. the unwillingness of the UN to intervene was exposed after the typhoon in Burma. The chinese in particular seem to be propping up the junta.

The UN is a toothless talking shop and nowhere does this stand out more than Burma. The Chinese have shown how odious their lot are by stymieing any effort to remove these guys from office. Like I said only a foreign intervention force will work.

dead right re the UN. UN is a contradiction in terms. there can't be unity when member states are so single minded in the pursuit of their own selfish interests a la the US, Russia, China or whoever, especially when these countries have the power of veto over any proposal. almost every worthwhile proposal is guaranteed to be shot down by one of the powerful nations while at the same time these same countries take unilateral action when and where it suits their interests. All the UN seem capable of doing is wishful thinking with the secretary general leading the pleading and praying without being able or willing to actually do anything to put pressure on the likes of the burmese junta, Mugabe etc.

That yank must have known what he was doing. Even though she told him to frigg off, he stuck around for 2 nights. Talk about a rude house guest.
