British Cabinet Reshuffle - Clarke sacked, apparently

According to the Guardian Clarke has been sacked and Prescott stripped of most of his power.

Huge changes apparently. Jack Straw is gone and his ministry is divided into two parts. Ruth Kelly is gone too; so much for a future Irish PM!

Maybe I've had my head in the sand but did anyone expect such a major move by Blair. Isn't he now in danger of a full frontal attack by Brown with the help of the more senior mps that Blair has demoted.

There will be no full frontal from Brown.

Pressure will be put (behind the scenes) on the beloved leader to name his date publicly. If he fails to do that it's likely that some obscure back bencher will stand against him in the autumn & hope to garner enough votes to embarass him out of office.

Dunno lately Blair has been stating that he intends to go the full term. Even if you interpret this as meaning he'll go a year before the next general I think Brown probably realises he'll need more time to put his stamp on the leadership coming into an election. He might be forced to do something soon for his own sake.

Labour have never had a leadership challenge in their history. Blair is banking on them ot having the guts to challenge him and he is probably right.

Brown has been in hiding for the last 3 weeks (another tax credit fiasco by the treasury) and surfaced only to telephone Anelina Jolie. This is not the behaviour of a man with the courage to topple the must sucessful leader in his party's history.

The reshuffle had to be massive as a Bertie style reshuffle wouldn't have distracted the BBC from the fact that the borough the BBC operates out of (Hammersmith & Fullham) had gone blue.

Given the Stand off with Iran in the UN I was very surpirsed to see JAck Straw go and an relative unkown (Margret Beckett) come in. No doubt Ahmadinejad will be claiming this as a victory.
