Irish Troops Not 'Hard' Enough for Africa

Apparently Irish soldiers have been banned by their commanding officer from playing soccer on the basis that it's too dangerous due to the firmness of the ground.

BBC NEWS | Africa | Irish army finds Chad 'too hard'

    'Indoor judo okay'

"The reality in Chad is that the ground is extremely hard," Mr O'Dea said.

"Some of the sports are played out on open ground and when people fall, it tends to have a much greater impact on their bodies than falling in a field in Ireland."

The cost of repatriating the 34 troops had been about 60,000 euros ($79,700), he said, but he denied the ban was related to finances.

The first phase of the EUFOR mission to Chad cost more than the annual GDP of the whole country.

I recently saw an aerial photo of Camp Ciara which we share with the French troops, they have a full GAA pitch.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

Sad, I know, but it would be a lot cheaper and less of an interference in Chad's affairs if they would play it at the Curragh.
