Treatment of Gurkhas a lesson to northern Loyalists

The new rules announced today regarding the settlement of Gurkha veterans in Britain have come as a great disappointment to campaigners who claim the Government figure of 4000+ benefitting is inaccurate and will only allow about 100 ex-members of the regiment to stay in Britain.

BBC NEWS | Northern Ireland | NI solicitors slam Gurkha ruling

The legal team from Derry (which included Martin McGuinness's nephew) which represented two former Gurkhas who won the Victoria Cross have reacted angrily to the decision and have pointed to the French Government who present retiring members of the Foreign Legion with a passport and indeed how Legionaires in ancient Rome were rewarded with citizenship.

Now I am certainly not that concerned about the welfare of the British Army, present or retired but it should be a lesson to those who offer their loyalty to Queen and Country. When you cease to be of any value, you are on your own.

If they get killed in action they are allowed a passport.

If the Gurkas had any decency at all they would get killed on the last day of service and not make any problems for the "proper british" authorities.

I believe there is a few mercenary vacancies in Bolivia at the moment but don't expect any honouring of service given there either.

Actually, all those who have served in the Brigade of Gurkhas since 1997 now have the right to live in the UK. This latest ruling affects those who served and were discharged prior to that date. The problem, as I understand it, with granting identical rights to those who served prior to that, would be that in theory there are tens of thousands of former Gurkha soldiers and their dependants entitled to come and live in the UK. The impact on housing, education, health services etc is potentially enormous. I've just watched some Liberal Democrat woman spouting off about it on the box. She's of the opinion that the numbers involved wouldn't be great, that many people wouldn't be interested in moving. Of course not, what former Gurkha in his right mind would swap a lifetime of poverty, hard work, sky-high infant mortality, poor education and prospects, ill-health and no old age pensions in Nepal (great scenery admittedly), for a council house, central heating, free education, health care and benefits in the UK for him and his entire family? I'll have to be careful here, I sound as if I'm defending the Govt. when in fact I loathe the duplicitous bast*rds!

Anyway, it's a great pity that the bunch of lying, swindling chancers known laughingly as HM Govt. have made such a complete balls of immigration policy in the UK of late, if there were fewer illegal immigrants and bogus asylum seekers in the country we might be in a position to be more generous to people who genuinely deserve a break.

Why don't you welcome the Gurkhas and their families to your country, Paul and ship off a similar number of chavs and ne'erdowells to Nepal in return?
