    Anti-NATO, pro-Europe - is there a party or movement?

I would want to see a strong European army taking the responsibility for European security, with NATO disbanded as obsolete.

Is there a party or movement in Ireland with such a policy?

FG seems to be pro-EU and pro-NATO at the same time, or perhaps that's different wings in the party? Libertas is (in the military context) pro-NATO anti-EU - a clear logic which I clearly can not accept, especially after the NATO mess in the Balkans. SF seems to be anti-NATO anti-EU (but *some* defence arrangement has to exist?). But I know of no anti-NATO pro-EU movement, something like French policy pre-Sarkozy.

Most but not all FGers are pro-NATO, but I wouldnt worry abour an FG goverment bringing Ireland into NATO, they'll never have the political capital to pull off that stunt.

There needs to be a bit of public education about the history and dangers of NATO - particularly their documented past funding and training of terrorist groups across Europe. NATO is an organ of the US military system, and cooperates deeply and widely with the CIA and NSA to spy on European people and businesses.

I don't know of any Irish group which is specifically anti-neutrality and anti-nato. However, I believe many in FG who are anti-neutrality and NATO-sceptics. Afaik, FG has no official policy on the issue.

If I remember correctly it was NATO that finally enforced peace in the Balkans in '95/'96 after the UN and EU failed miserably.

As far as some posters here are concerned, there's already an EU army, navy...and an EU 'mutual defence pact' or two...

NATO and EU are rather enmeshed. It is unlikely to find someone anti-NATO but pro a militarised EU.

Also NATO is unlikely to be disbanded as obselete you are forgetting the key component of the alliance; the US. NATO is basically the US guaranteeing Europe's security which is hardly something we really want to throw away...

Only 6 EU states are not NATO members and every NATO country (except non European US and Canada) are EU members or have rather close links to EU; EFTA, single market or seeking membership. In that sense the EU is already rather militarised.

It was elements of NATO that helped start the war in the first place, by training the Croatians and bringing in Saudi militants to train the Bosnian muslims.

The conspiracy theorists are out in force. I hear Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić are NATO secretary generals in waiting!

I spent nearly a year there in the mid '90s. Where were you?
