Today, President Evo Morales declared the U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia, Philip Goldberg, persona non grata, accusing him of financing the civic coup by the extreme right which took place on Tuesday in Santa Cruz.
Morales has repeatedly denounced the U.S. government for advising seditious groups in the eastern part of the country. In recent days he revealed that certain employees of the Embassy were financing the landowners demonstrations and road blockages.
Goldberg met in secret with the Prefect Rubén Costas, the leader of the separatists hardline wing, days before the outbreak of violence in the Cruceńa capital. The Foreign Ministry called urgently on the diplomat to explain his reasons for the meeting, recommended that he comport himself more carefully and reminded him that diplomats may not involve themselves in internal political affairs.
Despite this warning, Goldberg went on to visit with the Prefect of Chuquisaca, Savina Cuellar, linked with the civic business part of the separatist movement, and its known that he also met with the opposition prefects of Beni, Pando and Tarija........
Legislators, authorities from the Presidents office, and social leaders said that the separatist ambassador who worked in Kosovo now wishes to break Bolivia in two, through an alliance with a minority of agribusinesses and landowners.
